No Excuses

Society no longer has an excuse for not gaining an education considering that we have the choice to learn anywhere at our convenience.
In these days of young single parents and constant career changes throughout the course of ones life the need has grown for more varied choices when it comes to students achieving an education. Colleges and universities offering traditional classroom settings with day to day classes or night school are of course still an option however there are also open universities, colleges, and career institutes offering distance education or a combination of both distance and classroom learning for potential students to consider.

Distance education eliminates many hindrances associated with traditional classroom learning. Students who choose distance education can continue on with their current jobs and family obligations while furthering their education without being confined to commuting to a classroom or having to deal with strict time allowances to finish by a specific date. Conversely students are able if they so desire to  finish their degree in a shorter period of time then traditional classrooms would allow.
Students of distance education also have the option to study anywhere in the world even in many different countries throughout the course of their studies.

Methods of Delivery

There are two forms of online delivery for distance education synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous involves all of the students being present at the same time; although not necessarily physically in the classroom whereas asynchronous involves the students accessing the course materials entirely on their own time schedule. Some delivery forms of synchronous study are by telephone, videoconferencing, and web conferencing. Asynchronous forms can include delivery by audiocassette, email, message board forums, print materials, voice mail, fax and videocassette.

Further methods of course delivery can be by regular mail, internet, telecourse/broadcast, seminar, teleconference,cd-rom, pocket pc/mobile,podcast and integrated distance learning involving in-group instruction and interaction with a distance learning curriculum.

Grading for distance education usually involves assignments being sent to an instructor for marking via mail or internet except for exams;those are mostly conducted at a certified testing centre that the distance education school approves of and have to be scheduled in advance. Out of country exams can often be arranged at the consulate of a students orginating country in whichever country they are visiting.

Possible Hindrances

There are of course some potential problems related with distance education. The top pitfall probably being a lack of discipline without outside stimulus; therefore students have to be able to set study goals for themselves and try to stick to them otherwise some students never finish at all. Other possible problems can be not enough outside interaction with other students and with teachers; although some schools include online assignments to be completed with other students and usually teachers are able to be reached by email or other forms to offer guidance.

Less common obstacles to online learning can be not being able to find the degree you are looking for, having to find your own cooperative education placement, and your degree not being properly recognized.

Considerations

When selecting an online school you need to be aware of their reputation and accreditation since some institutes and employers will recognize your degree while others may not so it is best to look into such matters beforehand.

Some key factors to look at are:

Are you able to set goals for yourself and study independently ?

Which online schools offer the degree that you're interested in?

What delivery method will the course be delivered through ?

Are the degrees from a potential school recognized in your state or province and by potential employers?

Will you be able to find a cooperative education placement for yourself if applicable ?

If you are applying for government funding then you need to ensure that the online school that you are contemplating is eligible; however you should carefully consider the restrictions that come with financial aid such as minimum course load and time restrictions and the potential problems and added stress that those could entail.

Decisions

There are many  degrees available with distance education programs including : bachelors, doctorate, masters, associate's, diploma, certificate and non-credit courses being offered by numerous schools so make sure to take your time and do some research on each  school before enrolling though don't take to long because time's a wasting.
